Our History

Next Step Medical Co., Inc. was founded in January, 1995 in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in March of the same year.  The company,s mission in to gain a prominent market position for the products Distributed/Represented through customer service supported by an excellent selling staff at the office level and scrubs-"Techs" in the OR. Our focus is to increase product presence in the medical device field as well as in the health care market by meeting the needs of the Surgeons, Hospitals, Government and Private Institutions.

Next Step Medical Co., has always visualize the demand of medium to large size enterprises in the medical device industry that wanted to have access to Puerto Rico market through a Distributor. Our organization provides the platform by which companies can attain and/or increase exposure in the market and take advantage of the tremendous business opportunities.

The Principal of Next Step Medical Company, is a well season mature individual. Over 36 years of experience in the health care market, the last twenty five (25) in the implant, prosthesis and orthopaedic device end of the business. This breadth of education serves as the background to the Organization.

The first four (4) companies in our portfolio had a direct relationship with each product. Spine, Cervical Collars (stabilization in cervical surgery) Demineralize Bone (a must in spine and maxilofacial surgery).

Next Step Medical has been a pioneer in the medical device industry in Puerto Rico by bringing to the hands of the Orthopeadic surgeons "avant-guard" products that has simplified the procedures and/or made them safer.

The organization provided to the spine surgeon the first top thoracolumbar implant system. The ISOLA System provided the spine surgeon with hooks, connectors, screws wires and rods (strongest in the market, able to withsand tremendous forces and maintained the correction of the scoliosis curve).

Brought to the spine surgeon the first Demineralize Bone Matrix in gel form for better handling. This  tissue was the foundation of  what is today a multi-million dollar industry (The Osteo Biologic Industry). The tissue also alleviated the pain suffer by many patients post-surgery since allograft from the iliac crest was the only source of tissue adequate for spine fusion.

To make spine surgery safer the first "asisted introperative neurophysiological monitoring" was brought to Puerto Rico. Next Step Medical became a partner with "Biotronic International LLC". A vertified "CNIM"  (Certify Neurophysiological Intraoperative Monitoring) technician with all the credentials to monitor spine surgery (cervical, lumbar, thoracolumbar, craniotomy, mind mapping among others. The person that was responsible to assist the surgeon in the OR established her residency in Puerto Rico. There was 24/7 OR support to the surgeon. In a short period of time spine surgeon embrace this technology.

Introduced to the spine surgeon and neurosurgeon an open cell cervical collar for the immobilization of the cervical column. This open cell collar has four points of contact to distribute the weight of the head and avoid localize pressure points. With additional washable pads provider the patient a more hygienic collar.

​

Pioneer the first MIS L5-S1 disk fusion without the risk of damaging neural structures in the spine. Only an 18mm incision through the gluteus provided the working space for a cannula and be able to remove the nucleus disk, insert allograft, placed an implant and distract the disk space. Surgeons were able to release most of the patients next day.

Instrumental in creating awareness of the Sacroiliac joint fusion via MIS (Minimal Invasive Surgery). iFuse became the only product approved by the FDA for the fusion of the SI joint other companies follow with screws. The only porous titanium coated triangular shape product. Unlike screws, this unique triangular shape reduced rotation. Data shows iFuse to be three times stronger than an 8.0mm cannulated screw. Today over five (5) years of clinical Data support the remarkable results.

Radiation protection products, BloxR. The only machine washable OR apron collar and cap on the market. Provides 0.5mm Pb protection with only 50% of the weight of lead products. Our state of the radiation attenuation products affer protection without heavy metal in our garments. Enviromental friendly and longest warranty on the market.

Next Step Medical plays a vital role in the Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery residency Program by having contacts on a daily basis with the Residents and Attendings. Our promotional efforts consist of two (2) persons dedicated exclusively to "Centro Medico" where the School of Medicine is attached. This has made a tremendous mark on the relationship we have with physicians and the future Orthopaedic and Neurosurgeons of Puerto Rico.

Our organization has a strong believe to consistently provide in-service on new products to manufacturer and or its agents.

 

Our support personnel in the OR has been train in all of the trauma products by the manufacturer and or its agents.

 

Next Step Medical Co., Inc. has been the pioneer in the Puerto Rico Medical Device market by being a company with vision for new technology and service. Some of the contributions to the market have been, First Company in Puerto Rico to:
